Chapter Thirteen

I was able to go to school on Monday. My mother’s power surged Sunday night, so much she had to pour it into a crystal that I used to heal myself. It was a relief because I had been so sore all day that I couldn’t get out of bed, not even to lie on the couch where I could talk to Starshine occasionally as I read or played my zombie monster ranch game.

Thanks to the crystal, I felt much better Monday. Entropy even came home just before I stepped through the mirror to school. My brother was smiling, like he hardly ever did, wide and happy, although maybe it wouldn’t be visible to most people on his black-furred feline face. I didn’t notice a donut smell when I hugged him but his neatly pressed suit was free of bleach stains.

I hugged him with complete confidence because the curse bag tucked into my hat brim didn’t contain a cursed artifact I had to hide.

It was lucky I was able to go to school because our science teacher surprised us with a quiz. An easy quiz that left the whole class cheerful. Unless I’d made a trivial, careless error, I expected a perfect score.

Without a voice in my head prompting me, I was able to spend English class in relaxed quiet but it wouldn’t have mattered. Penny Akk and Claire Lutra sat on their side of the room with huge smiles. Claire Lutra’s superpower clouded people’s minds and her happiness made her control slip. The period passed for everyone in a pleasant haze with little getting done. Did anyone else notice? Claire’s power was deviously subtle and it felt more like one of those classes where time flies by.

No one bothered me on the way to lunch. The Ed boys were nowhere to be seen and clearly were not missed.

On my way into the cafeteria, I noticed Barbara’s table unusually full. Her gelatinous blue best friend Jacky sat beside her but the adorable blonde had returned, and the summoning circle girl as well. They were all engaged in intense conversation, the kind that involved lots of smiling, everyone leaning over the table in a huddle, and the blonde blushing so hard that I could see it across the room.

Juicy gossip was being shared with great joy and relish.

Everyone was happy today. My friends and whoever the girl with the pink hair was who was sitting with them today all flashed me the smiles of people who were happy just seeing me. Marcia’s flickered a little wider, betraying her relief at seeing me in good condition. Will beamed at me with even more adoration than usual as he scooted farther down the bench to invite me into my regular seat.

Cafeteria food must have been unusually good. My friends were all intent on gobbling it down before conversation broke out.

However, that did not take long. Charlotte swallowed her last spoonful of whatever flesh and blood teenagers eat and pointed that spoon at Marcia.
